Year 1

In these unprecedented times where we find schools are closed, we have put together some recommended websites and educational activities for parents to complete with their child/ren. We have provided each child with an exercise book to record their learning and we look forward to making time to share the children’s learning when we return to school.

Please also refer to your year group curriculum map

A number of educational websites have made their content available for home use over the next few months. Many of them have easy to find Year 1 resources that you can use with your child to support their learning from home.

Websites that are currently free to use:

https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/free access – User: march20  Password: home

https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/year-1-school-closure-home-learning-resource-pack-t-e-2549910 (interactive pack with daily challenges).

https://whiterosemaths.com/ (weekly maths resources – search Year 1)

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize

As well as these websites, we have attached a number of specific activities to support children’s learning.

Maths:

  • On the website, you will find two examples of 10 question calculation tables. These can be used as a model for you to practice the 10 calculations further with your child – everyday would be amazing! Your child should be encouraged to use practical methods like objects, numicon shapes (available on line) or dot and crosses. Please record these in the exercise book.
  • The 2, 5 and 10 times tables should be secure by the end of Year 1 and there are practise papers available on the website. Please record these in the exercise book.
  • Remember there are a range of websites that children can use to practice these tables such as:

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/7-11-years/times-tables

https://www.timestables.co.uk/

  • You can access more of these and many other maths activities from the Twinkl website as shown in the link above.

Reading/ Phonics:

  • It is essential that Year 1 children are secure with their sounds in preparation for the Phonics Screening, therefore an activity pack is available on the website to ensure daily engagement of reading and writing of sounds (see MonsterPhonicsActivityBook).
  • Please continue to read with your child at least 5 times a week.
  • Enjoy reading for pleasure with your child and remember to ask lots of questions about the book and the characters, plot, possible endings, the setting etc.
  • Remember there are free e-books available on websites such as – https://www.tckpublishing.com/free-ebooks-for-kids/

Writing:

  • There are writing opportunities focussed on Diary and Instruction writing that children can complete together with an adult or independently.
  • Please encourage your child to write at any other opportunities e.g. writing letters to their class friends, write a story, write a shopping list, make a fact file etc.

Topic: Use your Topic Mats (that were distributed before half term) in order to complete a Learning Log entitled ‘The History of Flight’.  Be creative and make a model, research facts or create a timeline of significant events that have changed the history of flight.

We hope you enjoy completing these activities with your child/ren and wish you and your family’s good health over the coming weeks.

Thank you for your continued support,

Year 1 Team
