Play Therapy…… What is this?
For some children, having to deal with difficult feelings they have alone can be scary and overwhelming. It may be quite frightening for them to begin to talk about their feelings or to know where to begin.
Play Therapy is a creative approach which can provide a sense of relief for a child be able to turn their thoughts, feelings and experiences in an external creative form.
Our Therapeutic Play Worker, Frances Donohue, works with identified children in school to use play as the child’s natural language and form of communication. During their weekly sessions, which take place at the same time every Thursday, the children are invited to explore the therapy room space, toys and materials, which have all been carefully selected for the therapeutic process. Frances’ role is to support the child in their exploration of these things and to offer opportunities for self-reflection, witnessing and feedback.
Trusting relationships are built and interaction in the creative space helps the children to make sense of themes which then helps them make sense of the world.
As parents, you will be asked to give consent if your child is identified as one who would benefit from Play Therapy. Regular meetings will be held to discuss your child’s progress and to share the important role you will play in your child’s therapy.
